Why Embrace Sustainable Travel in Spain? Your Guide to Authentic Experiences

As Jaume reminds us, using local services and products is the best way to support the communities you visit while also practicing your Spanish in real-life situations.
Can you imagine walking through lively markets, chatting with vendors, or tasting fresh products straight from the farmers? That’s just a taste of what awaits you during your summer in Madrid. Every neighborhood has something special and unique, so get out there and explore!
Top Sustainable Travel Tips for Your Spain Adventure
Discover Madrid’s Local Markets: A Sustainable Culinary Journey
Visiting local markets is a wonderful way to experience Spanish cuisine and talk to locals. Besides tasting fresh products, it’s a sustainable choice that respects the environment.
Surely you know the list of the most know mercados in Madrid like – Mercado de La Paz, Mercado de San Miguel, and Mercado San Antón. They are absolutely brilliant and you can find some fantastic puestos and food there. However, we are talking more of super local markets like Mercado de Santa Maria de la Cabeza in the south of Madrid a short walk from Museo Reina Sofía, or Mercado los Mostenses right behind Plaza de España with authentic South American cuisine, or Mercado de Guillermo de Osma very near Matadero with fantastic Mexican tacos and an Italian restaurant. You are spoiled for choice once you open up to the possibility of going somewhere more local.
Don´t be afraid to practice your Spanish; people will always appreciate you making the effort and trying to truly experience Spain beyond the tourist routes. This is also a perfect opportunity to practice all the vocabulary of fruits and vegetables, fish, and meat! If there’s a queue, however, always remember to ask ´¿Eres el último/a´ before taking your spot, otherwise you will be waiting for ages, or even worse – break the queue system! Because there is a system to what could seem like a mess at first glance. Trust us on that.

Support Local: Best Small Shops & Restaurants in Madrid
Step into neighborhood stores, try that hidden restaurant, and support the local economy. Here you’ll discover authentic flavors and personal service, far from the typical tourist routes.
You have probably seen on El Rastro Sunday the floors covered in tissues and white napkins. The unspoken rule is that the more of them on the floor, the more popular the place is, the fresher the food is.
Not only shop local, but follow locals! If you see that some of the bars are always packed, there must be something great. Maybe tapas portions are bigger? Maybe tinto de verano is well done, maybe there’s more students, which could mean that everything is a little bit cheaper. Try it out and see what it can take you.

Beyond the Tourist Trail: Explore Authentic Madrid Neighborhoods
For example, near LAE Madrid, the neighborhood of La Guindalera is the perfect chance to see everyday Madrid life, its parks, its bars, and a genuine vibe few visitors know.
It might sound cliché, but do try to get lost. Maybe get off two stations earlier than planned, or re-discover seeing cities on foot. Madrid will surprise you with hidden bars and coffee shops everywhere. There are some cities in the world where clearly one neighborhood has a certain vibe and for example, more restaurants, etc. In Madrid, you don’t have to worry, everywhere you go there are great places to eat, to grab a coffee, to just observe the Spanish rhythm of life in front of you.

Navigate Madrid Sustainably: Your Public Transport Guide
Getting around Madrid using the metro and train is comfortable, clean, and affordable. You’ll reduce your environmental impact and easily reach every corner of the city and beyond.
Metro is frequent and well connected, it also has aircon, phone, and internet signal (ahem, sorry London), and at almost every platform you can find plugs to charge your phone in case your battery is running low ( how useful is that?).
